‘t Kapelleke - Invasion

A threat approaches, but what sort of threat is it?

At ‘t Kapelleke this year, a design has been chosen which emanates threat. Whatever it may be, it is coming for you, or is actually taking you away. The desire to build a float with such forms had been around for some time, and this year the designers have found a suitable theme. Ron explains: “We have always wanted to do something with circles and finally Adrie came up with a design using them.”

Adrie, Wim and Ron set to work on the design in October, and later Maikel joined them as welcome addition. Maikel: “I immediately started spinning with them!”.

Because spin is what they do! One by one each circle will burst into life as an undefinable entity. This will come about with light, music, spinning and depth in the circles. Adrie explains how the sharp contrast been the circles and the heads is an important component of the design: “There is discord and contrast in colour between the circles and the soberly coloured heads. The heads express people in amazement or rather fear.”

The public should have the idea that they are not in the right place. Nothing makes sense, so keeping distance is advisable. According to Wim, this unsettling fear is a component of the float. “We don’t want to divulge anything about the invasion. It does not relate to one theme, because what can be understood about an invasion?” It could be anything.

The four designers at ‘t Kapelleke this year consists of three experienced men and a relative newcomer. Adrie de Meijer is a retired primary school teacher (65 years old; 11th design), Ron Gommers is a retired construction market worker (66; 12th design), Wim Mathijssen is a QHSE manager at a road construction company (64; 11th design) and Maikel van Overveld is an educational worker (29; second design).
