Klein-Zundert - T.R.I.P. Between Space, Illusion and Splendour

A trip to higher spheres

You may be that much enthusiastical about your own corso design yourself, eventually it is the hamlet that decides what float they want to build. And if they don’t choose your design, that is pretty disappointing. That is what Pepijn Wouters experienced last year in the hamlet of Klein Zundert. “That is not nice, but you know that this may happen.” This time his attempt succeeded. Of course, at first he wondered whether his idea was good and interesting enough, but the first reactions were encouraging. At the presentation of his design on his laptop Pepijn could show how the float would have to move and what the figurants would do. “You have to show that you know what you are talking about. And then you have to wait for a week. You mustn’t think you won yet.” But nevertheless he can start as a designer now: Klein Zundert is enthusiastic.

Colour and optical illusion formed the starting point of ‘T.R.I.P.’ And in addition the thought: how can one display what someone feels when he is high owing to some narcotic product ? Pepijn watched films and read books. No, he did not venture in some trip himself! Of course, the Beatle song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” came along, more or less a reference to LSD. And this way the title of his design arose: ‘T.R.I.P.’ . (In Dutch the letters stand for Between Space, Illusion and Splendour).

We will see two heads, evidently located in higher spheres. Their hairs seem to move with the music, composed by Arjan van Tricht. The heads are surrounded by round balls, eyes that are constantly moving. At some point a few figurants appear that contrast in colour with the purple and dark pink tints that dominate the float. There are some fierce yellow and green accents. Hopefully that will tickle the spectators’ imagination, Pepijn supposes.

Pepijn Wouters (26) is a student at Sint Joost school of Art & Design in Breda. In addition he is an independent graphic and spatial designer. Earlier Pepijn was (co) designer twice: ‘Murica f*ck yeah!’ (2021) and ‘Dystopia’ (2023).
