Poteind - Orangery

Come into the greenhouse

You sometimes come across one on holiday: an orangery. A decoratively designed greenhouse, filled with tropical plants, the leaves of which press against the glass. Colourful plants which you would like to stare at for hours at end, sitting on a bench. Or which you would like to walk through or under.

A footpath will be created through Poteind’s float, so that float’s interior can also be experienced. The form of the greenhouse is symmetrical both in its length as well as its breadth with a decorative spiral staircase at the centre. The greenhouse has a Victorian ambience and the plants are designed in such a way that they seem to touch the glass with their leaves. It appears to be a space enclosed in glass without actually consisting of any. There are both ground-cover as well as hanging plants. They will draw you into the colourful greenhouse and invite you to calmly enjoy them.

Dean is looking for new construction techniques so that the leaves and plants appear as slender and natural as possible. This is why he wants to experiment with diverse dahlia sorts. The intention is to use dahlias in the interior of the greenhouse. The greenhouse itself is made from steel and also the weathered spiral staircase will remain uncovered.

Dean Lahaije (22) is a light designer and provides made-to-measure light perception in spaces. ‘Orangery’ is his third design, following ‘Timetable’ in 2021 and ‘Nanook’ which was the winning float in 2023.
